Christmas Day – Prayers

The Church of England lectionary gives three alternative sets of readings for Christmas Day (including the Midnight services on Christmas Eve). These prayers for use with the lighting of the 5th candle on the Advent Ring, traditionally the while candle in the centre, are based on these schemes of readings.

Christmas – Set 1

Everlasting Father, today (this night)

a child is born who brings peace.

May this great light shine

in all places of darkness, doubt and despair.

As your grace brings salvation to all,

so may we live lives that trust

in your justice and righteousness.

And may there be true peace on earth.

God is with us. Amen.

Christmas – Set 2

With the angels and the whole host of heaven

we sing ‘Glory to God’.

May this light remind us of the salvation

that comes through Jesus Christ,

born today to make us a holy people,

heirs of hope.

As we celebrate this gift of your love and mercy

so may we join the shepherds

in praising you for all we have seen and heard.

God is with us. Amen.

Christmas – Set 3

Eternal Word,

spoken through prophets

and among us in the child in the manger,

bless this light that as it shines in the darkness

so your grace and truth

may fill the world with the radiance of your glory.

As we believe in your name,

so may we become heirs of your grace.

God is with us. Amen.
